[Review] Phanteks PH-TC12DX CPU Cooler

March 19, 2013 in Cooling, Overclocking, PC

Introduction and Gallery

Generally one strives to write an introduction that is fitting to the product being reviewed. Phanteks (being relatively new to the PC cooling market) has wrapped up most of those thoughts into a pseudo company introduction and mission statement combination.

Phanteks was founded from a group of engineers with a total of 20 years of international experience in thermal solutions. They paired up with a Dutch design team and established Phanteks in 2007. Phanteks venture into the CPU cooling industry with two goals in mind, “High-end quality and innovative products in thermal solutions.”

As a relatively young company, we strive to develop top quality and superior products.  Our first product, PH-TC14PE, was a great success in the overclocking community. With the success we have made, we are more passionate in developing new and better innovative cooling solutions than ever. Our Phanteks Design Team is situated in the Netherlands and consists of creative researchers, designers and developers whose only desires are to bring the latest cutting edge technology to you.

We are continuously pursuing excellence in thermal solutions so that we can develop and bring satisfaction to the enthusiasts and computer users everywhere. Our goal is to be the best in the industry and our motto is “no job is impossible.”

The last two sentences sum up what Phenteks has done with the PH-TC12DX as it pertains to fit and function.

Overview and Specifications

PH-TC12DX, a U-Type dual tower heat-sink with four 6mm heat-pipes allows for optimal airflow and cooling. PH-TC12DX’s 6mm heat-pipes are linearly aligned and developed to have the least amount of air and thermal resistance. Incorporating P.A.T.S and C.P.S.C Technologies, PH-TC12DX delivers better heat dissipation and heat transfers. PH-TC12DX includes dual PH-F120HP PWM Premium fans to allow for higher performance and/or silent operation.

Patented. P.A.T.S (Physical Antioxidant Thermal Shield) will greatly increase the cooling performance and reliability while deflecting other thermal radiation from other heat sources, such as the GPU, South Bridge, North Bridge, etc. P.A.T.S, ran at a long period, will display significantly better results in an enclosure, closed environment, than a tech station, open environment. In extreme conditions, PATS is able to withstand temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. P.A.T.S is environmental friendly and non-toxic.
Patented. C.P.S.C (Cold Plasma Spraying Coating Technology) is a brand new technologic forming deposit that displaces heat onto corresponding metals at a quicker rate. With this technology, the Phanteks PH-TC12DX enhances thermal conductivity on the soldered surfaces of the heat-pipes through the copper deposits.
Phanteks PH-F120HP PWM Premium fans uses UFB (Updraft Floating Balance) bearing, Nine blades and MAFO (Maelstrom Air-Fort Optimization) drive system to achieve massive airflow and perfect dynamic balance.  The PH-F120HP fans with the support of the anti-acoustic rubber pad and rubber bar produces low level dB(A) and eliminates vibration. With PWM functions built in, PH-F120HP fans allows you to set speed adjustments for either performance and/or silent operation.
SoliSku universal mounting kit provides broad socket compatibilities for Intel LGA 2011/1150/1155/1156/1366/775 and AMDFM2/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2 (Stock back-plate required).
Phanteks PH-NDC is made of high purity Nano diamond-like particles to improve the thermal conductance between components. The PH-NDC is a superb quality thermal compound for heat-sinks. Heat generated by CPUs will transfer to the heat-sinks without reduction in efficiency and resistance.

Package design is not the norm for many companies. In lieu of fancy colors, depictions of ice and cold temperatures Phanteks takes a part of nature and integrates it into the package design. What seems to be an abstract hurricane with the PH-TC12DX in the eye.

mini-102_3646mini-102_3640     The contents are packaged firmly within a fitted foam casing with two dual sided instruction sheets that are in English/European Spanish (English shown) and one other in two languages.

mini-102_3643mini-102_3642The dual tower design sacrifices little in the way of surface cooling area while allowing mildly increased airflow and lowering dust buildup a bit by breaking up the traditional fins long edge.

mini-102_3636mini-102_3638   The color selection (black, silver, blue, red with white fan) is very welcome and the only complaint that can be raised about it – if you can call it something to complain about – is the white fan. It does not look bad at all, but it may clash with many components in a windowed case.

While on the subject of fans – it is notable – that instead of using the latest, greatest forward curved, air slicing, blade design, Phanteks opted for a more conservative straight leading edge, concave paddle.

mini-102_3656mini-102_3648Phanteks uses nine of these blades which give more coverage at lower RPM compared to 7 blade units. Adding to this, Phanteks has made a slight modification to the flat blades (Note the ridges on the trailing edges). This should break up air flow a little thus causing turbulence which can aid in the prevention of dead (stagnant air) zones and mildly reduce dust buildup.

The PH-TC12DX has out of the box compatibility with Intel LGA 2011/1150/1155/1156/1366/775 and AMDFM2/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2 (Stock back-plate required) which makes it one of the more compatible out of the box units on the market.
